To have lasting self-development and self-growth, you need to understand what it means to improve yourself and why it’s so important. While there are plenty of books that can offer you advice on improving yourself, only you can decide whether or not you truly want to improve yourself enough to make it last for the long term. The following are some great tips on how to improve yourself for lasting self-development and self-growth.
Think before you act
When you're trying to improve yourself, it's important to stop and think before you act. If your goal is lasting self-development and self-growth, then you need a plan. Know what goals are most important, make a plan that leads up to each of those goals (i.e., what do I need to accomplish to get where I want to be?), and then break down each goal into a specific action step (i.e., what exactly am I going to do tomorrow?). If you don't have clear action steps in place, it's easy for your day-to-day actions or decisions—even those made with good intentions—to derail your progress toward achieving long-term goals. And if you're not careful, your efforts can even work against your goals. So take some time to reflect on why you want to improve yourself and how doing so will change things in your life. Then come up with an actionable plan that will help you build self-development and self-growth over time.
Focus on others
To achieve lasting self-development, you should focus on yourself first. Everyone has areas of opportunity, and self-awareness is key in determining where you should focus your efforts. Recognizing that we are all works in progress is part of accepting who we are, which allows us to gain a new level of humility about what we can accomplish going forward. And helping others along their journey helps strengthen our own sense of purpose – thus increasing your self-development. Sleep well
There’s a lot of debate over how much sleep you really need, but it’s not your grandmother who needs eight hours; studies have shown that an adult needs seven. Not only will lack sleep negatively impact your productivity, but if you don’t get enough ZZZs, it could also increase stress levels in your body. Stress has been linked to decreased self-control, as well as cognitive function and memory performance; long story short: it makes everything harder than it should be. To improve yourself for lasting self-development and self-growth, start getting at least seven hours of sleep per night—and turn off those late-night TV binge sessions before bed! It’ll do wonders for your mind and body.
Don't get discouraged
Building self-development is a long-term pursuit. Successful self-growth doesn't come overnight, so don't get discouraged by some of your initial attempts; even small steps can create massive momentum toward your future self-development goals. To build good habits, plan ahead with effective daily reminders and focus on actions that you're proud of when things are getting difficult. Stay consistent with your efforts as well—even if it's something that you've never done before or isn't particularly important, like waking up early each day, completing a goal every week, or talking to a stranger each day. Small steps create big success, later on, so be proud of everything you accomplish! You're worth it.

Each time you see your goal (which can be as simple as starting my business), take a moment to reflect on how achieving that goal will affect not only what you want out of life but also other aspects of yourself (your confidence, ability to work hard). Focus on that aspect, too. In short, make sure your goals are about more than just money or status. They should be about improving yourself as well. And remember: Don't beat yourself up if you don't meet them each day. Beating yourself up is counter-productive to building self-development and self-growth! Instead, recognize when things go wrong and use them as opportunities to learn from mistakes.
Enjoy every moment of it
Everyone wants to feel as though they’re moving forward, that they’re always doing something new and exciting. However, when it comes to self-development or self-growth, sometimes you have to take a step back to take two steps forward. That might mean taking a break from personal pursuits or social time to reflect on what makes you tick (or what ticks you off). It might be about taking time out of your day-to-day schedule for personal meditation or prayer; it could be about ditching all of your plans one evening so that you can sit down with yourself over dinner. Try mixing things up once in a while by setting aside some alone time just for yourself – even if it means missing out on an activity with friends or family. You’ll get through it, and then afterward you’ll realize how much more productive your efforts are. You’ll know how to improve yourself for lasting self-development and self-growth!
